Transylvania

Mysterious region, well known as the place where Dracule vampire lived. Dracula"s legend and his castle are the most famous tourist attraction. But these are not the only attractions of Transylvania, but only a small part of them.Visitors to Transylvania will also encounter stunning castles such Bran, near Brasov, - a Gothic fairy-tale structure. In close proximity to Brasov and Bran are the fortified churches at Harman, with its massive 13th Saxon towers, and Prejmer, the largest fortified church in Southeastern Europe. The 15th-century Corvinilor Castle, the most beautiful in Transylvania, located nearby Hunedoara, has a sumptuous Knights Hall – that can be used for functions or parties, as well as towers and buttresses reminiscent of the medieval times.

Transylvania"s multi-ethnic heritage (including German and Hungarian ) is delightfully apparent in the folk costumes, architecture, cuisine, music and festivals.

German merchants arrived in the 12th century to help defend the region against the Tatars and Turks. Over the next few centuries, they built seven fortress towns, known as the Siebenbürgen, and hundreds of fortified churches. Must-see spots include the pastel-hued city of Sigisoara and the churches of Biertan and Viscri, all Unesco World Heritage Sites.

Transylvania was a distinct territory (under various states of rule, including being a vassal state of the Ottoman Empire) until the Austro-Hungarian compromise of 1867, when it was incorporated into the Kingdom of Hungary in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. But after World War I and the dissolution of the empire, the empire lost Transylvania to Romania in the 1920, but not all territory.

deltaDanaube Delta

Where the mighty Danube river meets the Black Sea. It has created a massive deltaland, Europe’s largest wetland area. The Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve is actually home to one of the greatest ecosystems in the world and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

There are even over 300 species of birds recorded in the Delta. The Danube Delta is a wildlife enthusiast"s (especially a bird watcher"s) paradise. Millions of Egyptian white pelicans arrive here every spring to raise their young, while equal numbers of Arctic geese come here to escape the harsh winters of Northern Europe. Danube"s Delta their home also for cormorants, white tailed eagles and glossy ibises.

The Delta can be explored as part of a Danube River Cruise, or on day trips and boat excursions from Tulcea which has good hotels, restaurants specializing in fish dishes and the Museum of the Danube Delta.
